MANILA, Philippines – Manila Mayor Isko Moreno ordered the lockdown and confiscation of heavy equipment used in an alleged unauthorized demolition and construction in a vacant lot in Manila on Thursday.
On the vacant lot — which contained the heavy equipment and other construction materials — previously stood the Rasac Covered Court and a satellite office of the Manila City Hall on Alvarez Street, Sta. Cruz, Manila.
According to the investigation, Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua and his contractor were allegedly behind the demolition of the court and the office to pave the way for a new structure.
Both the demolition project and the new construction lacked permits from the local government, City Engineer Armand Andres said.
The demolition also reportedly affected the Senior Citizens’ Office, a barangay hall’s extension, and a day-care center. /mr
