THE Philippines’ Alexandra Eala is showing strong form heading into the Australian Open after defeating Croatia’s Donna Vekic for the second time in just over a week, this time with a convincing 6–3, 6–4 win at the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Filipino rising star earlier outlasted the Paris Olympics silver medalist in three sets at the ASB Classic in Auckland, where Eala went on to reach the WTA 250 semifinals. Her recent run has helped her climb to a career-high world ranking of No. 49.

The Kooyong Classic, an exhibition event that serves as a final tune-up for the Australian Open, highlighted Eala’s growing confidence and consistency as she prepares for the season’s first Grand Slam.

Ahead of the tournament, Eala appeared in a video with tennis legend and mentor Rafael Nadal, reflecting on her development and mindset.

“Moving differently means being brave, doing things your own way, and being authentic,” Eala said. “I’ve turned movement into one of my strengths and found ways to turn weaknesses into advantages.”

Nadal, who has mentored Eala since she began training at the Rafa Nadal Academy at age 13, emphasized the importance of individuality and style.

“The Australian Open has always been ready to make positive changes for our sport. You need to move differently from everyone else. It’s important to have your own personality, and then you can find your style,” said Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion.

Eala continues to train under coach Dani Gómez, with veteran coach Joan Bosch also part of her team.
