Twelve years after Yolanda/Haiyan: Building back better in the Philippines

The official final death toll from Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) in the Philippines was confirmed by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) as 6,300 people.

In addition to those who died, 1,061 people were officially recorded as missing, and over 28,000 were injured. Initial estimates had placed the potential death toll much higher, some as high as 10,000, but the final government count settled at just over 6,300.

Typhoon Yolanda, which struck the central Philippines on November 8, 2013, is considered the deadliest typhoon in the country’s modern history.
